A lot can change in a year: markets boom and bust, trends come and go, presidents get elected. In 2015, Margo Price was a country underdog just trying to keep enough gas in the tank to get to the next gig, but by the end of 2016, she was one of the genre’s most celebrated new artists and a ubiquitous presence on late night television and at major festivals around the world. It’s the kind of year most musicians can only dream of, and the arrival of Price’s spectacular sophomore album, “All American Made,” proves that she hasn’t taken a moment of it for granted.

Midwest Farmer's Daughter isn't merely an autobiographical title for the retro country singer/songwriter Margo Price, it's a nice tip of the hat to one of her primary inspirations, Loretta Lynn. The connections between the two country singers don't end there. Toward the end of her career, the Coal Miner's Daughter wound up collaborating with Jack White for 2004's Van Lear Rose, and White's Third Man Records provides a launching pad for Price, releasing her self-financed solo debut as-is as Midwest Farmer's Daughter.

First impressions matter. Especially on a debut album. Time and attention-strapped listeners size up an artist within a song or two, then move on or delve in further. Fortunately, it only takes Margo Price about twenty-eight seconds to convince you that you’re hearing the arrival of a singular new talent. “Hands of Time,” the opener on Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, is an invitation, a mission statement and a starkly poetic summary of the 32-year old singer’s life, all in one knockout, self-penned punch. Easing in over a groove of sidestick, bass and atmospheric guitar, Price sings, “When I rolled out of town on the unpaved road, I was fifty-seven dollars from bein’ broke . . .” It has the feel of the first line of a great novel or opening scene in a classic film.

It slipped out of a Mississippi of hot biscuits, genteel table manners and working-class sense, suddenly overturned by a grave sinning and suicide. Carried on an evening breeze of strings and a supple, foreboding voice like sensually charged breath, “Ode to Bilie Joe”—Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 debut as a singer-songwriter and a Number One single for three weeks in the late Summer of Love—was the most psychedelic record of that year not from San Francisco or London, as if Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson had conspired to make a country-rock Pet Sounds. Except Gentry, just 23 when she wrote the song, got there first, in miniature.

After this vibrant program of Ernest Blochs music for viola and piano was recorded in 2001, the tapes disappeared for fifteen years. When they resurfaced, artists Paul Neubauer and Margo Garrett were thrilled that the tapes were not only salvageable, but also featured playing that they felt presented their best possible efforts to bring these works to life. Among the works offered here are Blochs powerful Suite for Viola and Piano, hailed by one critic as the greatest work for viola in musical literature.

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, arranger and producer, Margo Rey, has had a rich career of performance and songwriting, including eight Billboard Top 20 hits over the years. The Roots Of Rey is Margo conceptualizing and embracing her roots as an accomplished Latin Jazz musician, presenting a modern American & Latin American songbook reimagined for the times. Performed by Rey in English and Spanish and arranged by multi-Grammy-winning pianist, Oscar Hernandez (Spanish Harlem Orchestra), the 13 songs cover some of the most memorable work from composers like Leon Russell, Hoagy Carmichael, and Michel LeGrand, and also includes an inspired 10-year anniversary salsa arrangement of Rey's original jazz composition, My Heart's Desire. "…a velvety sensuality within which one can discern a very well trained voice. Fans of Nora Jones and Sade have much to celebrate because the intimate vocalizations of Margo Rey with her rich and sensual voice evokes these figures but in Rey's case, she does it with a personal and modern twist." - American Airlines Magazine.
