With the exception of Joy Division's last single, Love Will Tear Us Apart, which faded out gradually into the anguished silence of singer Ian Curtis' suicide, none of the band's songs ever really ended; they either fell apart or collapsed, as if to bring about a proper end to something beyond their grasp. Joy Division couldn't stand still…

1997 release, a four disc set on London packaged in a 6 x 10" gatefold digibook with an 80 page illustrated book. 81 tracks total, including all cuts from the albums "Unknown Pleasures" (1979), "Closer" (1980) & "Substance" (1988), seven of the nine studiorecordings on "Still" (1981), plus Peel session versions of Love Will Tear Us Apart, Exercise One & Colony, the version of As You Said that appeared as the uncredited track on New Order's Video 586' 12" single and last -but certainly not least- 35 previously unreleased gems comprised of live & rare versions of their absolute finest. Utterly brilliant.

Ian Curtis' death prompted a flood of bootlegs and similar "tributes," likely motivated more by profit than anything else. Seeking to trump this problem – though arguably coming from much the same standpoint – Factory issued Still in 1981, a haphazard if still useful collection of odds, ends, and more. Considering that the band's many singles weren't properly compiled until much later on Substance, Still makes only partial sense – the studio cuts were mostly outtakes, while the live songs had their own problems.

The only in-depth biographical account of the lead singer of Joy Division, written by his widow.

Revered by his peers – Bono described his voice as "holy" – and idolized by his fans, Ian Curtis left behind a legacy rich in artistic genius. He was a mesmerizing performer on stage, yet also introverted and prone to mode swings. Enigmatic to the last, Ian Curtis died by his own hand on 18 May 1980.
