Something lies just beyond, and John Kilzer is trying to reach it, to take us there?with him. A better America, a level playing field, neighbors cooperating, strangers respecting one another. That hope is suffused in the attitude of every song here. It's what makes these songs timeless?that and the soulful, soul-filled sounds. Kilzer captures a tone that has seen too much and is yet optimistic. He knows that the weariness of trying 8239;to improve the world 8239;can make a young face weathered, but also that the struggle itself never grows old, keeping the soul vital.

This album features bass player Yoggie Musgrove and drummer Steve Ferrone (who plays with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers). On keyboards are Little Feat's Bill Payne and Austin player and composer Stephen Barber. Bruton and his buddy Randy Jacobs handle guitar duties. Old Fort Worth pal Glen Clark spices the mix with his harmonica while, Lon Price, leads the horn section on a number of tracks. Bruton's penchant for collaboration finds him co-writing nine of the album's songs with friends like former NRBQ guitarist Big Al Anderson and Memphis rocker John Kilzer.

Attracted by a delightful fusion of early music sonorities with modern expressiveness, the three composers in this amazingly rich and varied programme build on the magnificent harpsichord concerto legacy of JS Bach. John Rutter’s beautiful Suite Antique is full of rich and haunting themes, with a significant solo flute part and a jazzy Waltz which is as much Brubeck as Bach. Philip Glass delivers an exciting experience of virtuoso instrumental blending and solo expressiveness, and with typical wit and elegance. Jean Françaix’s Concerto is terrific fun throughout.

Jazz / Bop / Jazz Piano Trio

One of the few albums as a leader cut by pianist John Dennis – noteworthy not only for his own great work on the keys, but also for the presence of Charles Mingus and Max Roach in his trio! Their presence is a bit less surprising when you realize that the album was issued on the pair's Debut label, as part of its strong commitment to finding the best young jazz talent of the 50s – but it's still noteworthy nonetheless, as 1955 is a relatively late date for either player to be working as a sideman, especially in a trio record!

Let's face it: A lot of the children's music that comes from the United States is appallingly bad. It is annoying and highly sophomoric, not to mention condescending it does kids a tremendous disservice by talking down to them. John McCutcheon feels the same way, which is why the folksinger has been providing intelligent children's music. Not everything McCutcheon does is children-oriented, but here's the thing: His children-oriented work is so intelligently done that it isn't all that different from the McCutcheon albums that aren't specifically aimed at kids. Live at Wolf Trap falls into the latter category, although a lot of parents bought it anyway because of his fine reputation in the children's market.

The prolific John Hicks, whose output of trio recordings has been enjoyed during the past 25 years, now offers this mixture of trio, quartet and quintet formats with the powerful addition of Vincent Herring on alto and soprano sax. That should be enough for anyone. The opener is a trio version of the Hicks tune "In the Mix," a fast-mover that highlights the spirited drum work of Cecil Brooks, followed by the quartet's interpretation of "Yemenja," a beautiful composition that Hicks named after his daughter, which, quite naturally, has plenty of felling, while Herring's soprano adds just the right touch of flavor.

Three on the Trail, the Riders in the Sky's debut album, established their tongue-in-cheek tribute to cowboys and western music. Though the humor is piled on a little thicker here than on their later releases, the music is often quite good and they never deviated from this formula – slightly ironic covers, affectionate jokes and made-to-order originals on any of their subsequent records. They also rarely did it any better.
