Hank Jones, a true aristocrat of jazz piano, was 85 when this recording was made in 2004. His Great Jazz Trio has been around for almost 30 years, with various first-call bassists and drummers. His new team is state-of-the-art: bassist John Patitucci and drummer Jack DeJohnette.

Hank Jones, who was 88 years old at the time of the recording, has led many iterations of the Great Jazz Trio. The current band includes John Patitucci on bass and Omar Hakim on drums. This strong trio juxtaposes the agelessly elegant style and sophisticated harmony of Jones with the sharp, ultra-modern drumming of Hakim for interesting effects. The bass master Patituccion provides the solid foundation and imaginative solos. Although Sadao Watanabe was a guest on this album, it was important reunion between the Japanese alto saxophonist and Hank Jones. In 1976, Watanabe went to New York and recorded a wonderful, straight-ahead jazz album called I'm Old Fashioned with the newly formed Great Jazz Trio which included Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. This was a very special, 30-year reunion.

Before the talented pianist Bill Charlap went "major" with the Blue Note label, he was discovered by Venus Records and the Japanese audience. This "debut" album of Charlap, released in 1999, was an enormous hit and became an instant classic. Deeply rooted in the tradition of jazz and with tremendous knowledge and respect for the American songbook, Charlap's piano playing is lyrical, fantastic and powerful. This album may not dazzle you with apparent "newness," but the beauty of melody, sound, and deep swing will move you and make you smile. The great New York rhythm section, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, contributes with great performances as well.

Hank Jones has been known to be a quintessential sideman and occasional leader during his lengthy career as a premier jazz pianist. His most frequent project has been as the ostensible leader of the co-op group known as the Great Jazz Trio, a classic example of how the piano-bass-drums format has remained timeless, enduring, and ever challenging.

It was an inspired idea to match alto saxophonist Jackie McLean with the Great Jazz Trio, a regularly working unit on record and in concert led by the outstanding pianist Hank Jones, joined by two first call players, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams. Although the word "again" is added to McLean's two originals, the barnburner "Appointment in Ghana" and "Little Melonae," they aren't very different from earlier recordings in concept. ~ AllMusic

Collaboration is the third CD to be issued from a pair of 2002 sessions by the Great Jazz Trio, featuring Elvin Jones and Richard Davis with leader Hank Jones. The pianist previously worked alongside Davis on numerous sessions led by other musicians, including Elvin's Dear John C., though the Jones brothers worked together only sporadically during their long careers. ~ CDUniverse
