While the piano is a western invention, it has come to occupy a special position in Chinese musical life. The earliest Chinese piano pieces date from the first half of the twentieth century; many remain popular in the concert hall today. This latest release in Naxos' Chinese Classics focuses on piano works from the Republican period (1911-1949), featuring Jie Chen, Bronze Medal Winner of the 2005 Santander Piano Competition. The music draws on well-known ancient melodies or folk-tunes, as reflected in the titles.

Suspended Music: Chime-Bells in the Culture of Bronze Age China

Suspended Music: Chime-Bells in the Culture of Bronze Age China by Lothar von Falkenhausen
English | Mar 16, 1994 | ISBN: 0520073789 | 567 Pages | PDF | 12 MB

The Chinese made the world's first bronze chime-bells, which they used to perform ritual music, particularly during the Shang and Zhou dynasties (ca. 1700-221 B.C.). Lothar von Falkenhausen's rich and detailed study reconstructs how the music of these bells—the only Bronze Age instruments that can still be played—may have sounded and how it was conceptualized in theoretical terms. His analysis and discussion of the ritual, political, and technical aspects of this music provide a unique window into ancient Chinese culture.

Jia Daqun was born in Chongqing in August 1955. He is widely recognized as"one of the most gifted younger composers among those who immersed themselves in structuralism."(Frank Kouwenhoven: 'The Age of Pluralism, Mainland China's New Music (3).' Since 2000, Jia has been a member of Yoyo Ma's Silkroad Ensemble as one of their Composers in Residence. Jia's Fusion II, descibed by the composer as a 'concerto for Chinese Percussion and orchestra" is written in a broadly contemporary idiom - reminiscent of both Varese and Messiaen. While not self-consciously "Chinese," the ethnic instrumentation injects an unexpected jolt of color into this modernist score.

Do not let the prosaic album title fool you; contained within is 50 minutes of truly lovely Chinese orchestral music, designed to harmonize the body, emotions and mind. For millennia the Chinese have been aware of the healing properties of music but in recent years research has thrown new light on the relationship between music and the medical and philosophical model of the Five Element system. Regimen is the outcome of this study, a collaboration between medical researchers and leading Chinese composers. Two long tracks offer sweeping melodies performed by The Shanghai Racial Music Troupe, featuring shimmering strings, soaring flute, piping reeds, massed lutes, tuned bells and assorted percussion. Designed to balance all five of the elements within the listener, Regimen is an uplifting album that does indeed have a calming and inspiring effect. Besides Regimen, there are additionally five other titles in the series, each addressing one of the five elements. The entire series may also be purchased in a box set. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, All Music Guide
