Bolivia fights to maintain its traditional use of the coca leaf as drug trafficking threatens national customs. Bolivia is the third largest coca and cocaine producer in the world. The country has a long history of using the coca plant for many of its traditional medicines, in food and in daily consumption. It is something Bolivians, young and old, have chewed for centuries. The plant is one of the most important agricultural commodities in the country.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are dropped deep in the Bolivian rainforest armed only with three shabby 4x4s, which they bought from the local small ads for a maximum of £3,500 each. What follows is one of their most extraordinary journeys. They attempt to drive from the heart of Bolivia to the coast of Chile, encountering local drug lords, the debilitating effects of high altitude and the terrifying sheer drops of the infamous Death Road along the way. But before all that, they've got to escape from the deep, dark centre of the rainforest.

A man leaves the life he's known behind to support his family as an undocumented worker in this realistic drama. Freddy (Freddie Flores) was born and raised in Bolivia, but when the intervention of American drug enforcement agents led to the destruction of the cocoa fields where he worked, he finds himself with no way to support his family. Desperate for work, Freddy is smuggled into Argentina, where he's given a job by Don Enrique (Enrique Liporace), the owner of a Buenos Aires cafe who employs a number of illegal aliens, prompted less by benevolence than the economy of not having to pay them the same wages as legitimate workers. Freddy is given a job as a cook, where he's paid a mere 15 pesos a day (a phone call back home costs ten pesos), and he soon discovers that many of the townspeople in Buenos Aires don't much care for immigrants…

In 1973, Argentinean saxophonist Gato Barbieri contemplated a move to a more commercially viable, accessible sound, one that appealed to both North and South American audiences. He moved from the jazz vanguard toward it's exotic center (and finally into the commercial world altogether) with a number of records, including this one, which explored the various rhythms, melodies, and textures of Afro-Cuban and Latin American sounds. Bolivia features Barbieri immediately prior to his Impulse recordings that resulted in the celebrated four-chapter Latin America series.
