Atoll were a talented French ensemble who very much carried their own symphonic sound blending the finer aspects of fellow acts Ange, Pulsar and Mona Lisa. Their style is very theatrical in nature offering dynamic and melodic arrangements with some great song writing. Along the topics it is impossible to avoid the comparisons with Genesis, Yes and Mahavishnu Orchestra. The changes of members were another of the characteristics of this group who counted John Wetton among their members…

Orion performs Progressive rock sung in French, with some folk influences, close to French groups such as Mona Lisa or Atoll. One may also think of anglo-saxon bands such as Gryphon, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes or Gentle Giant. Orion lies somewhere between these groups, with its own style. Recorded in the year 1979, "La Nature Vit, L'Homme Lui Critique…" is a very sought-after collector, reissued by Musea with a new cover art by Jean-Jacques Killan and, as a bonus, the two titles from the band's single. Orion was back with a second album entitled "Mémoires Du Temps". Originally planned for the beginning of the Eighties, this second effort had to wait about thirty-three years to eventually see the light of day…

Along with Lucifer's Friend, Blackwater Park, and other bands even more obscure, Epitaph were members of a curious fraternity of '70s German bands that featured British singers. Founded in Dortmund in late 1969 by vocalist/guitarist Cliff Jackson and his compatriot James McGillivray, plus locally bred bassist Bernd Kolbe, Epitaph were originally named Fagau's Epitaph, but decided to shorten it after moving to Hanover, where they eventually signed with Polydor. Second guitarist Klaus Walz joined the fold halfway through the sessions for their eponymous debut (released in 1971), which, along with its successor, Stop, Look & Listen (1972), contained only five lengthy tracks, largely comprised of post-psych progressive rock, spiced with occasional jazz accents and widespread twin-guitar harmonies…

Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, a very long name for a short living British band formed in 1967 during the peak of British Psychedelia, but despite their formation era, they were one of the most advanced bands from their era, blended with great respect R&B, Jazz Psychedelia a la early Pink Floyd and a touch of The Nice style, hard to say if they were inspired in Keith Emerson's sound because they are coetaneous, but you can find many similarities. The first option was The Velvet Opera, but Dave Terry appeared in a session wearing a long black cape and a preachers hat, the band immediately identified him with Sinclair Lewis fictional character Elmer Gantry and in that moment his name changed and the band was baptized as Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera…

Mich Gerber, composer and double-bass player, Is one of the first musicians to work wlth Live looping systems. Following this path consequently, he defined a never heared before musical art form. But he also changed the double-bass's role and moved It fromits place in the back of the stage up front playing it as a lead Instrument. Mich Gerber developed a very dlstlnct way of playlng his instrument, by plucklng, bowing and uslng his body as a percussive tool. He forms, In effect, a solo acoustic 'bass orchestra' and creates layers of music, weaving the whole into a rich rhythmic and melodic soundscape. Mich Gerber leads us through a world of overtones with his onglnal approach and percusslve rhythm, occasionally employing modern 'noise' effects But even though his work has contemporary fee he explores ancient rnusic to achleve his unique sound.

You get all that you could want from this type of music: anthemic, groovy, hard rocking psychedelic tunes, with wah-wah and fuzz guitar, heavy organ sounds, husky and heavily accented vocals (reminding just a little of those of Nico), great guitar solos, acid flashbacks… okay, maybe not the acid flashbacks, but everything else is there for you in spades. Skyron Orchestra do manage to produce their own sound, which is perhaps on the slightly heavier side of psych rock (more Velvet Underground, Hendrix, Sabbath and Vanilla Fudge, with some of the contemporary heaviness of Orange Goblin and Soundgarden, and maybe even some Goth rock tendencies on display)…

Gargantua’s music provides a mind-boggling abundance of colors, moods and compositional schemes. Dense polyphonic structures are interwoven with seemingly harmless, “mock-heroic” tunes, morphing into either jagged interplay of guitar and replicated violin, or irreverent choral enunciations, electronic soundscapes and piano staccatos. Carnival fights here with Lent, seriousness with the grotesque, corporeality with sterility, baroque excess with ascetic introspection. This is a truly “Pantagruelian” vision of music that is self-conscious, self-mocking and highly goal-oriented. And surprising as it may sound, its intransigent, mathematical logic does not prevent the Polish artists from playing with a sharp rocky edge…
