Despite the scandal it created when first staged in 1875, Carmen has subsequently become one of the worlds most popular operas. The love affair at its heart shocked contemporary audiences but the music is imperishably vibrant and exciting so much so that, after the composers death, his friend Ernest Guiraud arranged two suites from the opera. Here the Toreadors Song and the graphically sensuous Seguidilla and Habanera dances are heard in all their orchestral glory.

Carmen McRae always had a nice voice (if not on the impossible level of an Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan) but it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretations of lyrics that made her most memorable. She studied piano early on and had her first important job singing with Benny Carter's big band (1944), but it would be another decade before her career had really gained much momentum…

Carmen McRae's tribute to Nat King Cole (which predated the late-'80s revival of Cole's music) has its strong and weak points. She wisely adds Cole's former guitarist John Collins to her regular trio and picked some fine material (including "I'm an Errand Girl for Rhythm," "I Can't See for Lookin'" and "Just You, Just Me"). However McRae's phrasing is much different than Cole's and why did she sing "Sweet Lorraine" without changing any of the words? Despite those reservations, this set has enough strong moments to justify its purchase.

Verve's Boy Meets Girl: Sammy Davis, Jr. & Carmen McRae on Decca documents the two late-'50s records featuring duets between Sammy Davis, Jr. and Carmen McRae. 1958's Boy Meets Girl has both singers on all the tracks, while 1959's Porgy and Bess is Sammy's show all the way as McRae is on only a couple of songs.
