Gathering Speed is the fourth studio album of the English progressive rock band, Big Big Train. It was released in 2004 by Treefrog Records. It is dedicated to the airmen and women who lost their lives in the Battle of Britain. The song The Road Much Further On was originally titled You Can't Draw Love. It was inspired by Spawton's then seven-year-old daughter. The album as a whole was a return to progressive rock for the band. It is the first album in which Sean Filkins recorded vocals, replacing Martin Read. It is also the only album in which Laura Murch recorded vocals, and the only Big Big Train album not to feature any songs solely written by Greg Spawton. Big Big Train are an English progressive rock band formed in Bournemouth in 1990. Until 2009, the band were mostly as a studio project band headed by Gregory Spawton and Andy Poole with changing line-ups and guest musicians. They have released eleven studio albums and three EPs.

Surprise - surprise. I can't figure it out - every time I listen to this album at least a little sounds new to me in some way. Respect! This occurs not often I have to confess. Stylistically Big Big Train don't have turned away from what they have offered before really - however, I'm nailed on here - even when listening for more than ten times now. Wow … it's hard to find the right words for the compositional attempt.

Big Big Train has a lot going for it on this release: beautiful cover art, a theme that we can sink our teeth into (the Battle of Britain) , seven longuish tracks all in the 7-8 minute range, brilliant musicianship featuring excellent guitars from Greg Spawnton, effective rythm section that is upscale from your usual neo lineups, fantastic vocals both male and female and , in closing an overall positive listening experience.

Swan Hunter is a song about the inevitable changing world and how these changes impact directly upon local communities. What an awe inspiring picture this is. The name on the ship says it all. Imagine being a child who grew up within this community, in one of those houses. Seeing these huge vessels grow daily until their launch and another would start to grow in its place. Imagine the relentless sound of machinery and construction workers. Your father most likely would have worked there and probably his father before him. It must have been almost impossible back then to imagine a time when this way of life, would come to an end. When it did end, what would the people do? If this is what you know and it has defined your role in life for generations.

The album was recorded at the three-time Prog Award winners's shows at London's Cadogan Hall last year and will be released as a triple vinyl box set and as a two CD digipack. Download and streaming versions will also be available. The album includes the best performance of each song played at the band's sold out Cadogan Hall, London shows which took place in the autumn last year. Big Big Train have revisited the sound world of early Genesis and Yes and have managed to create music with great emotional clout. They make beautiful, pastoral quintessentially English music: their name is Big Big Train. Beautifully understated yet consistently enthralling, Big Big Train wield pathos and poignancy with elegance and relish, amidst a musical backdrop that is as vivid as it is finessed.

What if Genesis had decided to go back to their progressive roots rather than a commercial direction in the 1980's? Of imagine if you will the notorious three reuniting to do likewise. The result might sound something like The Underfall Yard. You've got your mellotrons, twelve string guitars, a lead vocalist, David Longdon, who sounds just like Phil Collins (Phil called and he'd like his vocal style back), also the occasional flute…
